Making A Difference

Behaviorism Basics is an ongoing series of articles about the use of behavioral interventions and professionalism in the practice of care-giving.
“Why?”
How many times have you been around someone who has done something out of the ordinary, unexpected, or even hurtful and you find yourself asking “WHY”? It is only natural that we want to know why. All of us feel more comfortable with the known than the unknown. And when something unpredictable or scary happens we gain a sense of security in knowing what happened and how we can see it coming, or even prevent it from happening again in the future. So we ask ourselves “WHY” thinking that the answer to that question will give us this security. The problem is that the answer to “WHY” doesn’t do this for us very often.
What is the problem with WHY?
When you ask the question “why” what you are really asking is “what was the motivation for the person’s actions?” To determine a person’s motivation (assuming that they just won’t honestly tell you) requires observation and analysis. But the question “why” does not encourage observation and analysis. Instead, we are tempted to answer right away with the first reason that makes “sense”. What makes sense is not always based upon the whole truth, but instead upon our limited knowledge and understanding of the situation. For example, this sort of reasoning led us to such accurate findings as “the world is flat” and “the earth is the center of the universe”. Typically, when a person’s behavior scares us or harms us (either emotionally or physically) our answer to why will make us feel worse about our relationship with that person and prevent us from every finding out the true WHY. For example, he did it because he hates me, or he’s ungrateful, or because he is manipulative.
WHAT we should ask:
Every Incident Report we fill out starts us off in the right direction of what to ask. We should ask WHAT.
1.    WHAT happened that was a problem? Describe the person’s behavior so that people who were not there could picture what happened just from your words.
2.    WHAT happened before that may have triggered it? Look at the events that led up to the behavior to determine what cued the person to act.
3.    WHAT were the signs that something was wrong? What did they do that might have indicated how they were feeling and about to act.
4.     WHAT happened afterwards? What did they get as a result of the behavior? How did those around them respond? How did you respond?
The answer to WHAT gives us the facts we need to determine the outcome of the persons behavior and gives us a more likely chance of identifying the correct motivation for their behavior. And by identifying the correct motivation we have a better chance at providing a proper intervention to help the person we care for, and the security we need to enjoy the time together with them.
